The Washington Redskins released Canadian safety Oshiomogho Atogwe on March 12, 2012, saying an early goodbye to one of their big free-agent signings from last year.
The move came on the eve of the NFL’s annual free agency signing period.
Atogwe, a native of Windsor, Ont., signed a five-year, $26-million contract just before the NFL lockout a year ago. But he was hampered by hamstring, toe and knee injuries and finished the season as a backup.
Atogwe, who is of Nigerian descent, entered the NFL as a third-round draft pick by the Rams. Atogwe starred with the OVFL Essex Ravens before accepting a football scholarship at Stanford.
He was set to make $3.4-million this year.
