Danny Watkins began playing football at Butte College in Oroville, California, while enhancing his firefighting credentials. He quickly became one of the top players in junior college. Watkins then went on to start 25 games at Baylor, earning first-team All Big 12 honours as a senior in 2010.
“I was a true Canadian hockey kid,” said Watkins, who realized the NHL wasn’t in his future at 270 pounds in the 12th grade. “The way you put your feet in the run game is similar to skating. Moving backwards in hockey was very natural to me as is the case with pass protection. A lot has been able to carry over to my benefit.”
