Rubber Match

With the overall series tied at 1, Canada and Team USA will renew their U19 rivalry at the University of Texas-Arlington’s Maverick Stadium on February 7-8.

The match allows the two football powers to get a sense of where they are at before the 2014 International Federation of American Football (IFAF) U-19 World Championship, which will be held this July in Kuwait.

Canada and Team USA have met in the past two IFAF U19 World Championship finals with Team USA having captured gold in 2009 while in 2012 Canada evened the score with a 23-17 win in Austin, Texas.

“This is the highest level of football I can play at,” Kyle Van Wynsberghe, one of the Canadians selected to compete, told his hometown Simcoe Reformer. “I’m nervous but it’s going to be a lot of fun as well.”

Canada’s Junior National Team is composed of 60 players like Van Wynsberghe, selected from regional identification camps. On February 7 they take on USA Football’s U-19 squad. They will also be vying for one of the 45 spots on the roster for Kuwait.

“I looked at the roster for the US team and there are kids from Alabama, Penn State and Ohio State,” Van Wynsberghe told the Reformer’s Eddie Chau. “These are some of the top football schools in America. You can’t argue with the level of talent on that team.” http://www.simcoereformer.ca/2014/01/16/delhi-native-team-canada-bound

Canada’s Junior National Team is led by head coach Warren Craney (York University) who continues as defensive coordinator in 2014, a role he has fulfilled with not only the 2009 and 2012 Junior National Teams but also with the IFAF World Team (2010-’13).
