Draft Eligible Canadians

Twelve notable Canadians are eligible for this year’s NFL draft, to be held May 8-10, 2014 in New York City.

Two Canadian university players are among the 12: Bo Lokombo (Oregon – raised in Abbotsford BC), Jesse Joseph (UConn – Laval QC), Nolan McMillan (Iowa – Toronto ON), Hunter Steward (Liberty – Calgary AB), Brander Craighead (UTEP – Ottawa ON), Connor Williams (Utah State – Ottawa ON), Brent Urban (Virginia – Mississauga ON), John Urschel (Penn state – Winnipeg MB), Hosam Shahin (Rice – Thompson MB), T.J. Jones (Notre Dame – Winnipeg MB), Laurent Duvernay-Tardif (McGill – St. Hilaire QC) and Evan Gill (Manitoba – Winnipeg MB). http://www.gbnreport.com/canuckreport.htm

Winnipeg native Gill was a 2013 Canada West All-Star, and invited to play for the West team in the 2014 East-West Shrine Game at Tropicana Field in St. Petersburg, Florida on Sat., Jan. 18. He is only just the third Bison selected to participate since 1985, with the last being Israel Idonije of the NFL’s Chicago Bears in 2003. In three seasons (2011-13), the 6’3″, 280 lbs. defensive tackle has accumulated 84.0 tackles (16.5 tackles for losses) with 7.5 sacks.

Jones, a 6’0, 195-pound receiver, is also a Winnipeg native, but grew up in Roswell, Georgia. A Notre Dame Fighting Irish captain, Jones caught 70 passes for 1,108 yards and nine touchdowns in his senior season. Most prognosticators predict that Jones will be selected in the middle rounds of the draft.

In 2013 one Canadian was drafted. A record four players from Canada were selected in the 2012 NFL Draft.
The total number of Canadians selected in the modern NFL draft is 25. Two Canadians were selected in each of the 2011, 2009, 2005, 2003, 1992 and 1986 drafts.
