Christian Covington is the latest Canadian to hear his name called during an NFL Draft. Here is a history of the others:

Of the 30 Canadians who have been drafted in the modern era (since 1983),

• Four have been selected in the first round: Kelowna’s Danny Watkins (Eagles, 2011), Montreal’s Tim Biakabutuka (Panthers, 1996), Oakville’s Tony Mandarich (Packers, 1989) and Belleville’s Mike Schad (Rams, 1986). Oakville’s Mandarich (2nd overall) was drafted ahead of Barry Sanders (3rd overall) and Deion Sanders (5th overall)

• None have been drafted by the border club Buffalo Bills. Several Canadians have played for the Bills (including Tim Tindale, Jamaal Westerman and Stefan Charles), but none have been drafted by the club

• Three have been drafted by the Los Angeles/St. Louis Rams, more than by any other franchise (Windsor’s O.J. Atogwe, 3rd round in 2005, Magog’s Tom Nutten, 7th round in 1992, and Belleville’s Mike Schad 1st round in 1986)

• One has been a long snap specialist. Randy Chevrier (MgGill) was selected by the Jaguars in the 7th round of the 2001 draft. Fellow French Canadian long snap specialists J.P. Darche and L.P. Ladouceur started their long NFL careers as undrafted free agents.

• An overwhelming majority have been offensive players (11 offensive linemen, six receivers, three tight ends, two running backs and two quarterbacks). In total more than half of all of the Canadians selected have been offensive or defensive linemen.
